On board the LST

Those are barrage ballons. They help keep dive bombing planes from flying stright over the ships. You can just make out some fire on the beach. Note the back smoke in the background.

See the smoke columns... That is fire from the battleships pounding the land before the landing.

This German AA ( anti-aircraft ) gun was destroyed up from the landing
